So it was the tail end of 2011, a business I was working on was about to “go on the shelf,” and I was looking for a few ways to augment my income.
One of the ideas was a book – called “How to Live On $10,000 a Year.”
I had made it my business to go for the whipsaw effect – saying that you cannot possibly live on $10,000 a year is like saying you cannot possibly only work four hours a week. (And we all know how the book “The 4-Hour Workweek” turned out. Right?)
Long story short…a couple calls to publishers…some more research…calls with friends…some reading…and…New Frugality was born.
That wasn’t entirely the plan now, was it? A site that helps you do the most with what you have? How is that augmenting my income – and how is that helping you augment yours?
Which brings us to (1) the title of this post and (2) the reason for this site.
Two Sides to the Financial Coin
Side one is the kind of stuff that we covered – and still cover – over at New Frugality. And we’ll cover it here, too, in the days to come.
Side one: spending less, using what you’ve got on hand, not buying things you don’t need. That’s great, and living a New Frugality lifestyle can certainly help you.
But the other side of the coin: finding ways to bring money IN. And that’s where we’re going to spend as much of our time on this site.
This Is Not About Get Rich Quick Schemes
I have a conscience, and there’s no way I’d launch a site and put my name behind it and peddle a bunch of crap. You can smell those Snake Oil Salesmen a mile away, and this site is not about them.
Plus…well, on my “day-job site,” I am pretty adamant that I have to be positive. See this post for more about that: Stick a Fork in Negativity.
Which brings us to what we’re going to do on this here site: Help you find ways to find money, avoid negativity, avoid snake oil, and walk you through real-world things that we’ve tried, and are trying.
Yes, it is likely that some of the things you’ll see here WILL FAIL. Part of that is the point – transparency, so that you’ll see where some of this works and some of it goes off the rails.
But we also plan on succeeding quite a few places: and we plan on taking things that have been “micro-successes” and aiming to replicate them other places.
Little checks, over and over again…
Example: 4 years ago, I wrote a book. I forget the title – the “niche” was a combination of “real estate” and “social media.” I moved on to other business pursuits, found some clients, helped some companies…and left the book pretty much untouched, save for a refresher at the beginning of 2010.
I just did my taxes and, surprise, I found out that I made a whopping $75 off of that book. In 2012.
What if I tried that a few other places? What if I found other things that I wrote – and rewrote them?
Tiny, positive steps toward more income
Yeah, that’s where this site is going. Some revenue creation, some savings. Some frugality, some creativity.
A lot of transparency.
We hope to inspire you…the way we’ve been inspired…
This site isn’t going to be like their sites.
Guess what? We don’t plan on being like those sites, either.
But we are going to borrow elements from all of the above. SO the point here…is this…
How can we help you find an extra $10,000 a year?
It might be under the couch cushions – or it might be some skill or talent that you have that you can monetize.
Both sides of this financial coin – we plan on covering them here.
Thanks for checking the site out – and we can’t wait to share with you a little more.
